Away Mode activation
I think the away mode on the friends list should activate when you use the/afk emote or havent done anything for 15 or 20 minutes.
Right now you have to set it manually.
I just found it odd (since the early betas) that /afk never changed your status to afk...

Or be able to set it so that if you have gone idle for X amount of time, it moves you to idle/away.

Um, why? If your planning to go AFK stick up ya away message ahead of time. What about if your guild is planning to do something, elite mission, GVG, HOH. And you come back but didn't move ya chracter and he's still in away mode from the timer. Than you missed out because the people forming will look at guild charter saying " o he/she's afk".

If you are AFK for prolonged periods, just switch off your Guild Wars...
Or sit in GH and set your status to away.
I really don't think there needs to be an AFK emote.

There already is an /afk emote. Your character sits down when you enter it.
The OP just wants the status to be set to Away in the Friends window when you enter /afk. Why would anyone be against this? Everything is already in place - only a link to the status and the emote needs to coded.

Not really suppoortive of the game setting me to Idle on it's own. Sometimes I am sorting out screenshots or converting them to jpgs. There should be an /idle emote that also sets your status to Idle.

So we can tell if someone is idling at the Luxon/Kurzick base or a mission

Exactly! A mission I did recently, we had a monk go afk and never said a word, did anything, or moved from mission start. But said he was ready when we checked. This is why an auto-idle would be great. :P

See what I said above. If someone is afk that is up to the guild. It's not a problem and it won't stop most guilds from asking that member or even waiting a few minutes to check. If that person doesn't reply when asked, then it's their own fault. Most active guilds have a voice chat system (Ventrilo, TeamSpeak) or something else. There are already plenty of ways to check if someone is really idle. If they are there but not paying attention or have the game minimized, it's their fault.
Auto-idle starts when your mouse cursor does not move for one (or the deemed amount) minute and ends when the mouse moves or a key is pressed. No need to complain about a good feature idea if you don't fully comprehend it. :P

No need to comprehend anything if your AFK set the AFK mode, if your AFK, set the AFK comment on vent and TS, OR move to the AFK vent and TS channel.
A useless emote in my opinion.

Not everyone can or will think of going to their friendslist and changing to away, especially when they'll only be away for a couple minutes. This is meant to be something that's convenient, a type of luxury to make things a bit easier on everyone. How is that a bad thing?

It my opinion, it's useless. If you disagree than move on cause I won't change my mind no need to keep quoting and quoting, in the end to me it's useless.

I'm pretty famous in my guild for just going afk and crashing out on my bed.. the only problem i see with an idle detection is that it requires a DLL file to check how long you've been afk.

I think its a great idea. I dont always set mine too away or sometimes i have to go someplace one a seconds notice and dont have time to set my status. That would really help out.

If ANET somehow links the idle timer to the same timer that starts up the screen saver, then as long as you are doing stuff on your computer you won't be set to idle.
Besides, if it is a problem, you just need to maximise GW every few minutes. If you can't spare enough time to do that, then you might as well be AFK as far as other people in GW are concerned.

bumping this suggestion as deserving much more attention than it is currently getting.
also note that "idea index" thread links "Auto-away after remaining idle for a few minutes" to an incorrect location

If you can remember to press N and set to Away, well done, for everyone else, the timer IS a good idea. There's no disadvantage to it for those who remember but a vast one to those who can't.

Yes, cause when half your guild's online and no one's answering it'd help.

Auto-away makes sense. It also makes /afk work as expected.

For /AKF status, two changes should be added:
- 1 Make the /akf emot change your status to AFK. (But NOT the sit emote)
- 2 Add an option to the General Options tab with a number box to set the time you want the game to wait before automatically setting you to AFK.
